Jay-Z Previews Watch The Throne

July 8, 2011 by

Jay-Z brought in about 20 media insiders (and 2 lucky teenage guest who were the first to pre-order the CD), inside SoHo’s Mercer Hotel to listen to Watch The Throne. Kanye West was in Paris, but Jay-Z led the listening session which including running through all of the songs they recorded for the collaborative album. They’re still finalizing song titles, tracklisting, and release dates but it should be out soon.  Sounds dope! Can’t wait (*Bart Scott voice*)! Check out some of these excepts from the preview from those who were there:

1. The first track we heard, tentatively titled “No Church,” is Jay-Z’s current favorite of the bunch. It’s easy to see why. An apocalyptic rumble of a beat backdrops a diabolically earwormy hook (courtesy of Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean) about religion and power. Jay-Z unspools brainy couplets about great thinkers like Socrates, Plato, Jesus, Kanye and himself; Kanye raps about drugs and sex, among other topics. – via Rolling Stone

Simply put: Throne proves to be a masterpiece. No exaggeration. Though it was mostly crafted here in New York, songs were also written in  Paris, Australia, and Bath, England. The influences of the international locales are evident, but its the true grit of New York’s hip-hop spirit that truly shines through. And though the title suggests pomposity and majesty, Throne is lyrically well-balanced and accessible. There are opulent raps dripping with swag for sure, but also plenty that smack of militancy, worry, and grief. – via EW

The recording of this album also inspired a new Jay-Z solo album, for which he has already completed two songs and is honing four more concepts—one of the contest winners actually nabbed the night’s biggest scoop, which is that Ocean will also appear on the first single from that forthcoming album. – via GQ

Is This Watch The Throne’s Album Cover?

According to MTO, this is Jay-Z and Kanye West’s album cover for Watch The Throne. Ryan Seacrest (out of all people) is reporting that the album will drop it’s new single on July 11th and then the album will have a mid-August release date. That sounds like it’ll be just in time for them to takeover the MTV VMA’s and then go on a nation wide tour.

**UPDATE** – This is indeed the album cover. Pre-order it now!

DJ Khaled – We The Best Forever (Tracklist)

Pretty much every rapper not named Jay-Z, Kanye West, Tupac, or Biggie has a verse on DJ Khaled’s new album.  Usually these rap posse cuts sound forced and out of place but DJ Khaled usually does do a good job of putting them together. I guess he does have one decent skill besides being annoying.  Check out the tracklist for We The Best Forever coming out on July 19th.

J. Cole’s Album Will Be Watching From The Sideline On September 27th

J. Cole hit to Twitter this afternoon to announce his official album title. We all knew it would be something along the lines of Cole World but he went ahead and added a colon and made it Cole World: The Sideline Story.  Maybe he feels like he’s been watching this game from the sidelines too long? And it’s his turn to play and become the star? We’ll find out September 27th. The single Workout is awful so I hope something gets reworked so the album doesn’t get pushed back again…

Tentative Tracklist: Jay-Z & Kanye West – Watch The Throne

The caption for the photo above – “Yup, little bro, we made another classic.” LowKey from UHTN just came through with the post saying these 10 songs are definitely on the highly anticipated Watch The Throne album from Hova and Kanye West. A few more songs are scheduled to finalize this tracklist but these 10 are real. It’s interesting to see that Beyonce and Bruno Mars are the only features on this and it’s also interesting to see that H.A.M. was left off. It’ll probably end up as an iTunes bonus track.

1. Lift Off (Feat. Beyonce & Bruno Mars)
2. Murder To Excellence
3. Illest Mother Alive
4. Why I Love You So (Guilt Trip)
5. That Shit Crazy
6. Living So Italian
7. Who Gonna Stop Me
8. Whole Lifetime
9. We Are Young
10. Anthem
